Is Olive Oil Soap Good for Your Face? A Gentle Guide for Sensitive Skin

Dionysia Paronis

Walk down the skincare aisle and you'll be told your face needs a foaming gel, a cream cleanser, a micellar water and a toner. So it can come as a surprise that one of the oldest, simplest ways to wash your face is still one of the gentlest: a good olive oil soap.

Is olive oil soap good for your face?

Yes, as long as it's a well-made, gentle bar. Olive oil soap has been made around the Mediterranean for centuries. A soap made mostly from olive oil lathers softly and rinses clean, without the tight, squeaky feeling many harsher cleansers leave behind.

How is olive oil soap different from regular soap?

Many supermarket bars are made with cheaper fats, synthetic fragrance and detergents that can strip your skin of its natural oils. A true olive oil soap is made the traditional way, by turning plant oils into soap. The result is a mild bar that cleans without overdoing it.

Our bars combine olive oil from our family grove at Myponga Beach with a little coconut oil for lather and shea butter for softness. That's it. No synthetic scent, no colourings, no long list of ingredients you can't pronounce.

Who is olive oil soap best for?

A gentle olive oil bar is a lovely choice if you:

  • have sensitive skin that reacts to fragranced products
  • find foaming cleansers leave your face feeling tight or dry
  • want a simple routine with fewer products
  • prefer plastic-free, natural skincare

Face soap or body soap: is there a difference?

Your face is more delicate than the rest of your body, so it's worth choosing a bar made with it in mind.

ZERO Bar Soap – our fragrance-free everyday bar. Gentle enough for sensitive skin from face to toes, and a favourite for the whole family.

How to use olive oil soap on your face

  • Wet your face and the bar with lukewarm water, not hot.
  • Rub the bar between your hands to build a soft lather.
  • Massage the lather over your face in small circles for 20 to 30 seconds.
  • Rinse well and pat dry with a clean towel.
  • Follow with a moisturiser or balm while your skin is still slightly damp.

Keep your bar on a draining soap dish between uses so it stays firm and lasts longer.

Finish with a little olive oil

After cleansing, we love our Face Hydration Balm. It's made with just four ingredients: our olive oil, calendula grown in our garden, beeswax and vitamin E. It melts into the skin and works beautifully overnight.
