What Is Castile Soap? The Olive Oil Soap Behind Our Body Wash

Dionysia Paronis

If you've been looking for a gentler, more natural body wash, you've probably come across the words "castile soap". But what actually is it, and why do so many people with sensitive skin swear by it?

Where castile soap comes from

Castile soap takes its name from the Castile region of Spain, where soapmakers have used olive oil to make soap for centuries. Traditional castile soap is made using olive oil as its main ingredient, and it has been a staple in Mediterranean homes for generations.

Today, "castile" is used more loosely to describe any soap made from plant oils rather than animal fats or synthetic detergents. The most traditional versions, though, are still made mostly or entirely from olive oil.

Why castile soap is so gentle

Its mild formulation makes castile soap a popular choice for people who prefer natural, simple products. It produces a soft, creamy lather that cleanses the skin without stripping away its natural oils, which is why it's so often recommended for sensitive and delicate skin.

  • Plant-based: made from oils, not synthetic detergents.
  • Simple: traditional castile soap has a very short ingredient list.
  • Versatile: it works as a body wash, hand wash and face wash.

Is OOLUX body wash a castile soap?

Yes. Our Liquid Hand & Body Wash is made the traditional way, with our own homegrown olive oil from our family grove at Myponga Beach. Olive oil is the only oil in our wash recipe, and we absolutely love how our skin feels after using it. It's an added bonus for anyone with sensitive skin.

The ingredient list is short: potassium, water, olive oil and vegetable glycerine. Our scented washes add a few pure essential oils, and nothing else.

ZERO Hand & Body Wash – fragrance free, for the most sensitive skin.

Lemongrass Hand & Body Wash – fresh and uplifting, with lemongrass and cedarwood.

Peppermint Hand & Body Wash – cool and invigorating, with peppermint, cedarwood and patchouli.

How to use castile body wash

  • Use a small amount on damp skin, with your hands or a washcloth.
  • Expect a softer lather than supermarket washes. That's normal for a true olive oil soap.
  • Rinse well and moisturise while your skin is still slightly damp.
  • Keep a bottle by the sink as a gentle everyday hand wash.
